generator #3215 Feb 2006 • 20.00 UhrWiener Konzerthaus • Neuer Saal essl / o.blaat / loibner /filip / noid Karlheinz Essl, Klaus Filip, Bernhard Loibner and Keiko Uenishi (aka o.blaat) are sharing very different musical backgrounds such as new music, electronica, pop-rock, improvised music etc. The common denominator of this group of musicians is the use of laptops in its versatility and rich musical possibilities. All four of them are constantly working on the development of their instrument which plays a key role in their artistic work. A conventional stage setup seems more than inadequate for this quartet which uses exclusively computers to create their music. Because of this the distribution of sound in space plays an important role for them: to enable a complex listening experience, to demonstrate the clear allocation of voices but also to clarify the assignment of the physical directions in space. Like an amp for the an electric guitar the PA system is part of the immediate sound-producing system of a laptop and thus corresponds with the performer's physical position in space. The formal structure of the ensemble follows a compositorial strategy developed by Karlheinz Essl. It aims for the single individual to operate equally within a group and without the direct control of a "ruler". Still the role of the computer is being consistently followed on the conducting level: throughout the piece the conductor defines different points in time at which the formation of the ensemble should change. A random operation then creates a new combination of players - independent of personal preferences and to the full surprise of the performers. The communication medium for this process is the lighting system: if the light turns on for a performer he/she starts to play, if the light turns off one fades into silence.

ReviewNach einer Lesung (Thomas Ballhausen) definierte das Duo Hautzinger/Essl den Rahmen: anspruchsvolle Musik aus dem weiten Feld des Noise, dicht und laut – so wie alles was dann noch folgte. Wohl nur der geringste Teil des Publikums hatte die beiden bisher gekannt, aber E und U waren kein Thema, so konnte auch ein Komponist wie Essl reüssieren und begeistern. |

Akustische und visuelle Objets trouvés werden im Zuge einer Live-Performance in ekstatische Klang- und Bilderfluten transformiert, wobei die semantischen Widersprüche und Gegensätze sich rauschhaft aufzulösen beginnen.

Die in der Avantgarde des späten 20. Jahrhunderts oftmals gestellte Frage, ob man sich als Komponist für das „Werk“ oder den „Prozess“ entscheiden solle, beantwortet Karlheinz Essl auf sehr individuelle Weise: „Die beiden Antipoden nähern sich in mannigfaltiger Weise einander an. Ich möchte für eine neue Sichtweise plädieren, die Werk und Prozess nicht als Widersacher gegeneinander ausspielt, sondern Komposition und Improvisation miteinander zu vereinigen sucht.“
