Der Wiener Komponist und Elektronikspezialist Karlheinz Essl, der mit
ungewöhnlichen Klangkombinationen auf seinem Powerbook improvisiert als wäre
es ein Synthesizer, wurde von der "Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln" zu einem Workshop
eingeladen. Vorher trifft er nun auf die experimentierfreudigen Kölner
Klangtüftler Melvyn Poore, der seine Tuba mit Live-Elektronik verfremdet und
erweitert, und Thomas Witzmann, der all seine - oft skurrilen -
Klangerzeuger, wie Waldteufel, Abflußrohr oder Schuhspanner in einer
Reisetasche mitbringt.

The "Vienna Group", a circle of five authors interested in the transformation of the written word into action and music marks the beginning of a new movement of experimental literature in the 50s and early 60s. In this tradition other Austrian writers, like Liesl Ujvary, Brigitta Falkner, Kathrin Röggla are performing their texts by using different media like film, comics, computer-generated sound and the Internet. The presentation of their work will be part of a revue about certain aspects of the Austrian literary avantgarde and its international context presented by the author Sabine Scholl together with the composer Karlheinz Essl who uses original musical documents of the Vienna Group to compose and perform an ongoing soundtrack for this event. Additional images are provided by the video artist Michaela Grill.

De Weense componist Karlheinz Essl (* 1960) geldt als een autoriteit op het gebied van de elektronische muziek. Interactieve realtime composities, software-environments an Internet zijn daarbij sleutelbegrippen. Prime uit Groningen en het Nieuw Ensemble nodigden de Oostenrijker uit voor een serie portretconcerten waarin het gebruik van interactieve live-electronica centraal staat. Met Entsagung voor ensemble and live electronics herneemt het Nieuw Ensemble de samenwerking met Essl en het Parijse IRCAM uit 1993. In more or less voor vier spelers die hun instructies via laptops ontvangen, toont Essl zijn toegenomen fascinatie voor improvisatie. Het derde stuk in het programma is een recent strijkkwartet, dat op personlijke wijze abstracte concepten mengt met tonaliteit. Hierin bewijst Essl dat hij ook in 'gewone' composities voor akoestische bezettingen een vitaal en actueel componist is.

Er war abwechselnd als Straßenmusikant in der New Yorker U-Bahn und als Posaunist vom Dienst für Karlheinz Stockhausen unterwegs und hat sich mit seiner extravaganten Gratwanderung zwischen traditionellem Kuhreigen und E-Engagements beim Ensemble Modern oder renommierten Opernhäusern wie Covent Garden eine selbstbewusste Karriere aufgebaut: Mike Svoboda, Ausnahmeposaunist und Alphornbläser zwischen Jazz und Avantgarde, gastiert im »Fast Forward. 20:21«-Zyklus gemeinsam mit Karlheinz Essl, der mit seinen avancierten Live-Electronic-Improvisationen das Spektrum der Neuen Musik erweitert: »Bei Improvisation bist du im Moment in der Zeit drinnen«, so Essl, »gestaltest die Zeit und deren blauf ›in real time‹ und musst nun innerhalb dieser Zeit, die gnadenlos abläuft, einerseits einen bestimmten Weg verfolgen, den man sich vielleicht vorher überlegt hat, oder der sich im Verlauf der Improvisation als gangbar herausstellt, und zugleich auch die Rückbezüge ständig wahrhaben: was ist schon gewesen, wie kann ich mit dem weiter arbeiten …«
