Computer, Software und die Möglichkeiten digitaler Klangerzeugung prägen seit vier Jahrzehnten das künstlerische Schaffen von Karlheinz Essl. Der Wiener Komponist und Klangkünstler fand vor einigen Jahren durch das Experimentieren mit modularen analogen Synthesizern einen neuen Zugang zum Live-Musizieren. Dieser ist eng mit den intuitiven Möglichkeiten und Widerständen dieser Geräte verbunden. In seiner Soloperformance präsentiert Karlheinz Essl neue Werke für modulare Synthesizer, Transducer und No-Input-Mixer, die er selbst zur Uraufführung bringen wird.

Karlheinz Essl live

Computers, software and the possibilities of digital sound generation have shaped Karlheinz Essl's artistic work for four decades. A few years ago, the Viennese composer and sound artist found a new approach to live music-making by experimenting with modular analog synthesizers. This is closely related to the intuitive possibilities and resistance of these devices.

In his lecture-performance at the Sorbonne University, Karlheinz Essl will talk about his transition from digital to analog and from composition to free improvisation. Beginning with his generative multimedia performance FABRIC (2017), based on digital computer algorithms, he explains his shift to the analog domain in his work-in-progress Coastlines (2022-2024) for modular synthesizer. Finally, he will present his latest work, réflexions résonantes, a collaboration with the French artist Hervé Bacquet.
