Following in the footsteps of Luciano Berio's Sequenze, Karlheinz Essl has composed a series of works that explore the technical and expressive possibilities of a solo instrument - Sequitur. Even the title of this series refers to Berio's project. Yet there is also a significant difference: the incorporation of live electronics. The notation for the violin part is specified down to the last detail. At precisely marked points in the score, the violinist presses a button that activates the live electronics. The sounds he plays at that moment are thereby transformed and multiplied with the aid of a computer programme. Essl has compared this to wandering through a hall of mirrors. One always encounters one's own reflection (the sounds one produces oneself), but each time in a different form (the electronics distort the sounds in the same way as concave and convex mirrors). The computer programme incorporates an element of chance, which varies the speed and density of the sound transformations. In every performance, the violinist is therefore confronted with a different 'response' from the software. Electronic music originated at the time to counteract the randomness and imperfections of a performance by musicians. More than half a century later, the violinist is the stable factor in Sequitur III, and the randomness is attributable to the electronics.
