Playing instructions

Four trombones are positioned in the four corner points of a virtual square around the audience.

The score is organized in a sort of chess board with 7x7 fields. Each field contains a musical phrase which duration is left to the discretion of the player. After finishing a phrase, the player makes a pause of an undefined length. Then he proceeds to the next motive and so on.

Each musician begins in one of the four corner fields of the grid. The entrance of the players is staggered. Player 1 starts with his phrase. When the maximum of the crescendo is reached, the second player enters, then the third and finally the forth. Each player takes an individual path through the grid following the directions of the respective arrows. Each path describes a spiral that finally ends in the center field.

Here, the players improvise with the supplied pitches using structures that have already been played before. Never fall into the habit of empty virtuosity. Instead, floating colors and textures that sum up into collective sound are feasible.

At a sign of the first player, the improvisation ends. Each player follows a diagonal that leads the the corner field opposed to the one on which he started. There the piece ends.

Spielregeln

7x7 fo(u)r trombones ist eine Komposition für 4 Posaunen, die vorzugsweise in einem halligen Raum oder im Freien aufzuführen ist. Die 4 Spieler sind so um das Publikum herum aufgestellt, dass sie die Eckpunkte eines gedachten Quadrates markieren.

Beginn: Jeder Spieler beginnt mit einem anderen Kästchen in den Eckpunkten der Partitur. Am Anfang erfolgen die Einsätze gestaffelt: Spieler 1 (links oben) beginnt, sobald sein Crescendo das Maximum errreicht hat, setzt Spieler 2 ein. Sobald dieser sein Maximum erreicht hat, setzt Spieler 3 ein usw.

Fortgang: Jeder Spieler folgt seiner Pfeilrichtung und spielt jene Abfolge der Klangmotive, die in Form einer Spirale bis zum zentralen Käst¬chen in der Mitte der Partitur führt. Zwischen den einzelnen Motiven sollen kurze Pausen eingefügt werden – deren Länge wird vom Spieler aufgrund des musikalischen Zusammenhanges bestimmt.

Zentrum: Sobald ein Spieler in das mittlere Feld angelangt ist, spielt er den dort notierten an- und abschwellenden Liegeklang, gefolgt von einer Pause (Fermate). Dieser Vorgang wird so lange wiederholt, bis alle Spieler dieses Kästchen erreicht haben. Tondauer, Lautstärke und Pausenlänge sind zu variieren.

Ende: Wenn alle Posaunisten sich im Zentrum zusammengefunden haben, gibt nach einiger Zeit einer der Spieler ein Zeichen. Die Musiker spielen nun die Motive entlang einer Diagonale bis hin zum schräg gegenüber dem ursprünglichen Ausgangsfeld liegenden Kästchen und beenden dort das Stück.

Structures
The score consists of several types of structures. The dynamics and duration are not defined and decided by players according to the global musical context, always striving to produce a collective sound together.

Drones: long sustained sounds. The duration is decided by the player. The fade in can be supported by a wah wah mute. Glissandi has to be played as smooth as possible.

Sforzati: short and loud impulse, sometimes with a glissando toward the main note.

Melodies: always espressivo with a solistic attitude.

Trills: always swelling and fading. The duration is decided by the player.

Repetition: fanfare-like tone repetitions, always to be played in the given tempo and rhythm.

Klangbausteine
Die Partitur besteht aus 7x7 Kästchen; jedes davon beinhaltet ein musikalisches Motiv. Diese Klangbausteine lassen sich in verschiedene Kategorien einteilen:

Liegetöne: ausgehaltene Klänge mit unterschiedlichem Dynamikverlauf. Die tatsächliche Länge der Töne wird vom Spieler bestimmt. Das Anschwellen aus dem Nichts kann durch einen WahWah- Dämpfer unterstützt werden. Glissandi sind so gleichmäßig wie möglich auszuführen.

Sforzati: erscheinen als isolierte Impulse oder mit kurzen Vorschlags-Glissandi.

Melodiefragmente: sind stets espressivo und mit solistischer Attitüde zu spielen.

Triller: stets an- und abschwellend. Die tatsächliche Dauer liegt im Ermessen des Spielers.

Repetitionen: fanfareartige Tonwiederholungen, stets im angebenen Tempo zu spielen.
