(Ana Lara)

LABoratorio is a mixed-media performance for viola, percussion, live-electronics, dancers and realtime-generated video which was conceived by Karlheinz Essl for the festival Musica y Escena 2011 in Mexico City. In an experimental stage setting, an alchemistic laboratory is created where divers ingredients like music, dance and video are melted together in order to create a new being which transcends the original matters from which it is constructed.

The entire piece subdivided into 5 sections. Each section has its own title (an anagram derived from the word "laboratorio"), its own music and choreography (see below) and a specific visualization. These titles are:

Lab Oratorio - Root or Labia - To Boil a Roar - Oral Air Boot - Aorta O'Broil

Music

The backbone of the performance are 5 music pieces which are arranged in a symmetrical manner:

The center piece is the anchor point of the performance where all instruments playing together for the first (and only) time in the piece, creating highly complex interactions, full of energy and power. This is the only piece which is has not composed beforehand - it will created on the fly thanks to the improvisational skills of the violist Alexander Bruck and percussionst Ivan Manzanilla together with the composer performing on his self-developed computer instrument m@ze°2.

Visuals

The visuals (generated by a special computer program written by the composer) create an immersive environment composed of various sources: letters and secret messages, textures and paintings, architectural elements and humans in movement. This ever-changing flow of dancing images is projected onto a large screen in the back of the stage, being controlled by a musician and also by random-based realtime algorithms.

Dance

Similar to their instrumental antipodes viola and percussion, two dancers (a man and a woman) are acting in front of the projection screen on stage. They are dressed in white, those becoming part if the projection. The choreography will be developed by Nadia Lartigue as a counterpart to the music.
